The inmates housed at MD DOC – Eastern Pre-Release Unit (EPRU) located at 700 Flat Iron Square Road in Church Hill, MD are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

MD DOC – Eastern Pre-Release Unit (EPRU) – Visitation

Eastern Pre-Release Unit is located in Church Hill Maryland. It is a pre-release unit so the inmates who are housed here are close to completing their prison sentence (within two years)and are sometimes granted work release. Currently this facility can house up to 170 adult males. Work release inmates are granted jobs with local companies and can earn pay, others are in non-supervised programs and are paid by the state to work on various public works jobs. The operating budget for Eastern Pre-Release Unit is about $5.1 million dollars.

Eastern Pre-Release Unit offers inmates the chance to earn a GED and gives classes in math, reading and writing. Offenders can also work growing andcultivating crops at the prison that are donated to the Maryland Food Bank.
