The Mesa County CO Detention Facility is a medium-security detention center located at 215 Rice St Grand Junction, CO which is operated locally by the Mesa County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Mesa County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Grand Junction Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
Mesa County Detention Facility currently has 611 beds, plus the booking area. Male and female inmates are housed separately as are a different class of inmates. Managing an increasing population in the Detention Facility while maintaining a safe environment for inmates and staff is one of the biggest challenges currently facing the Detention Facility. Plans are also in the works to expand the existing jail. The design and cost of such an expansion are currently being explored.
The Detention Facility has expanded several times. In 1996, two 8,000 square foot “pods” were added on to the facility for a cost of $3.4 million. Each pod originally housed 56 new beds. Additional beds were also added in the corner cells of each existing housing units bringing the total amount of beds in the facility to 336.
In 2007 and 2008, 54 beds were added to the two newest housing units. In 2009, the inmate intake areas known as the Booking area was remodeled expanding capacity. When first arrested, inmates are housed here until they are assigned more permanent housing based on their classification. Often times, inmates bond out before they are moved into other areas of the facility. Inmates who need extra supervision are also housed here.
Work Opportunities – Inmates may have the opportunity to work in the kitchen, laundry, floor crew, and road crews. Road crews are only made up of sentenced inmates and members can earn a flagger certification for future work. Workers earn "good time" or time reduced from a sentence for work completed during their sentence. Inmates also learn valuable job skills through on-the-job training that can be utilized upon release from the facility.
Inmate Medical, Mental Health and Dental Services – contracted through Wellpath. The healthcare staff at the Mesa County Detention Facility provide emergency, preventive, and chronic care for all inmates regardless of legal custody status.
Medical staff are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Medical staff include registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse practitioner, physician, dentist, licensed professional counselor, mental health clinicians, and medical assistants. Mental health staff are on duty 7 days a week.
Preventive and chronic care services, including dental care, diabetes care, and others are provided in-house by experienced medical staff. Radiology and laboratory services are available. Specialty services are provided off-site by community medical specialists when necessary. Specialty care is coordinated between the on-site medical director and the off-site specialists.
During the booking process inmates are screened to determine what medical and mental health problems need to be addressed immediately. On admission nurses conduct medical health assessments to evaluate inmates' general health, as well as any history of medical problems.
