MI DOC – Baraga Correctional Facility (AMF) basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 906-353-7070

This facility is for adult inmates.

The inmates housed at Baraga Correctional located at 13924 Wadaga Rd in Baraga, MI are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

The Baraga Correctional Facility is a mixed custody state prison in Michigan that houses about 900 level I and level V adult male inmates. It is considered a maximum security institution because it houses level V offenders inside seven housing units surrounded by a secure perimeter. Level I offenders are housed in a 280 bed unit outside the secure perimeter and many of the minimum offenders offer supportive roles to the institution. The institution is secured by two fences with razor wire, electronic motion detection systems, multiple armed guard towers, and a patrol that operates 24 hours a day.

Inmates at Baraga Correctional Facility are provided with medical and dental treatment directly at the prison. Inmates can also participate in treatments for substance abuse and various mental health issues. All prisoners are encouraged to utilize the education system within the facility, which currently offers inmates the opportunity to take adult basic education courses and earn a GED.

AGE LIMIT: Males, 18 and older

Programming – Prisoner programs include Adult Basic Education and General Education Development preparation. Treatment services include counseling, substance-abuse services, psychotherapy, religious activities and Assaultive Offender Programming.

Prisoners are provided on-site routine medical and dental care. Serious and emergency problems are treated via local community providers, the Brooks Medical Center at Marquette Branch Prison and at the Duane L. Waters Health Care in Jackson.
Security – Double chain-link fences, gun towers, an electronic detection system, razor-ribbon wire and a 24-hour patrol vehicle make up the perimeter security.
