MI DOC – Detroit Reentry Center (DRC) basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 313-368-3200
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Detroit Reentry located at 17600 Ryan Rd in Detroit, MI are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
The Detroit Reentry Center houses level II adult male state inmates run by the Michigan Department of Corrections is located on the east side of the city. The 39 acres of land the facility is situated was previously used by Daimler Chrysler AG to store automobiles. The facility contains buildings for housing, educational and vocational instruction, food services, a health clinic, dialysis unit, administrative offices, warehouse storage, MSI factory, and security. Inmates are able to take educational programs to learn to read, earn an adult basic education and GED. Vocational training is available for inmates in food services from the preparation of the food to serving it. The prison has a small segregation unit and is separated from the surrounding area by a six-foot landscaped berm with evergreen and deciduous trees.
Programming – The institution's academic program provides for special and remedial education as well as General Education Development completion for all prisoners, including those in segregation. The educational program priority is to develop reading skills for each prisoner to the eighth-grade level. Vocational training includes an on-the-job training program for porters and food service. The vocational food technology program serves meals as part of the training. About 200 community volunteers help staff in providing prisoners with faith-based programming.
Health care is provided at the prison, at the Duane L. Waters Health Care in Jackson MI or at local hospitals in the event of emergencies.
Security – Security is provided by two 12-foot fences, electronic detection systems, razor-ribbon wire, gun towers and buffer fencing.
