The inmates housed at Parnall Correctional located at 1780 E Parnall Rd in Jackson, MI are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Parnall Correctional Facility (SMT) is a minimum-security state prison that houses 1696 Michigan Department of Correction's prisoners located in Jackson. SMT maintains 47 buildings, including 5 housing units sitting on 45 acres. Inmates are secured by two 16-foot fences, razor wire, and an electronic detection system. Offenders can participate in work details that include jobs within the Michigan Prison Industries working in a shoe factory, a sign shop, a creamery, manufacturing metal furniture, textiles and working in the meat processing plant. Work, vocational, and educational courses offered at Parnall CF help prepare inmates for reintegration with society upon their release.
Michigan State Prison or Jackson State Prison, which opened in 1839, was the first prison in Michigan. After 150 years, the prison was divided, starting in 1988, into four distinct prisons, still in Jackson along with the Parnall Correctional Facility, the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility where inmates can finish their general education the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center which is the common point of processing for all-male state prisoners sentenced to any Michigan prison; and the Cooper Street Correctional Facility which is the common point for processing of all-male state prisoners about to discharge, parole, or enter a community center or the camp program.
Prisoners are provided on-site medical, dental and psychological treatment. More serious cases are treated at Duane L. Waters Hospital.
A variety of work assignments are offered within the facility; as well as jobs in the Michigan State Industries, including meat processing, creamery, textile, metal furniture, shoe factory, sign shop.

Visiting Hours
Monday, Thursday and Friday are 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Weekend visits are according to an odd/even schedule, based on the last digit of the prisoner's number.
If the number ends in an odd digit that prisoner may have visitation only on the odd dated weekend day.
