The inmates housed at MCF Shakopee located at 1010 W 6th Ave in Shakopee, MN are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. Since 1911, Minnesota has housed all of its female offenders at a facility in Shakopee. In 1986, offenders were transferred from the old "women's reformatory" building to a modern correctional facility.

MINNCOR Industries provides work opportunities for offenders, and many also work on facility maintenance crews and in food service. Offenders have access to a variety of academic and vocational educational opportunities. Mental health and treatment services are also available.
