The inmates housed at Craven CI located at 600 Alligator Rd in Vanceboro, NC are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Craven Correctional Institution is one of the state's largest prison processing centers. Convicted felons from North Carolina jails enter the system by first going through processing at the medium security prison. During the three-to-four-week period that they are at Craven, new admissions are tested, evaluated, and interviewed to determine assignments to prisons, jobs, and programs. More than 400 inmates process though Craven Correctional Institution each month.
Craven Correctional Institution is located in Vanceboro North Carolina. It is a medium custody correctional facility that houses 796 adult males. The majority of inmates at this facility will be incarcerated here a short period of time. Craven Correctional Institution is primarily a reception and diagnostic facility responsible for the intake and initial processing of offenders. Offenders are assessed, tested, and interviewed to determine the proper treatment and their security needs. This process will also determine the prison, programs and work assignments the inmate will receive. After the classification period is over inmates are usually moved to a more permanent location. Due to Craven Correctional Institution serving as an intake and processing facility, and short duration most offenders are at this prison, programming is limited.
