This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Odom CI located at 485 Odom Prison Rd in Jackson, NC are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Odom Correctional Institution is a minimum security prison located in Jackson North Carolina, part of Northampton County. Odom CI was built to replace the old Northampton Prison located north of Jackson. Construction was completed in 1961 on the 300-bed prison to provide inmates with physical or mental infirmities meaningful work in a healthy farm setting. The current capacity of Odom Correctional Institution is 352 adult males. Inmates at this facility have committed either a misdemeanor or a felony.
The state first used the tract as a farm worked by inmates who were bused daily from the old Northampton prison and from Caledonia Correctional Institution. The farm is still in use today but is farmed privately – without inmate labor.
The prison's main building consists of an east and west wing. The east wing was built in 1980 and has 144 cells, of which 24 are designated for administrative/disciplinary segregation. The west wing has dormitory housing built in 1961. Support buildings house recreation and vocational areas.
Select offenders can work in a variety of job placements within the facility in custodial, maintenance and food preparation/serving. These support jobs filled by inmates save the tax payers thousand of dollars each year. Inmates in the East wing are held in cells, while inmates in the West wing are housed in a dormitory setting.
Odom Correctional Institution offers inmates academic courses to earn a GED and obtain an adult basic education. Additionally, Roanoke-Chowan Community College works with the prison to provide vocational classes in building construction, HVAC and plumbing. Classes also are offered in Computer Language. There are two GED classes and one ABE class.
During an inmate's incarceration, they are provided mental health services and medical and dental treatment.
Inmates may work a variety of jobs around the prison such as janitorial, maintenance and food service. Others may be assigned to minimum custody litter crews.
