The inmates housed at Piedmont CI located at 1245 Camp Rd in Salisbury, NC are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

The 11-story Piedmont Correctional Institution is on a 52-acre site. Administrative offices are in a building that sits at the base of the six-story inmate residential tower. Each floor has two levels and is divided into two wings. In each wing are three cellblocks, each designed to hold 16 inmates. There are 48 cells used for administrative and disciplinary segregation.

Piedmont is a point of entry into the prison system for male felons ages 22 and older from western North Carolina who are sentenced to less than 10 years in prison. Upon arrival, inmates undergo a series of diagnostic evaluations that will determine future prison assignments. Many inmates are at Piedmont with short stays because they are being processed into the prison system or receive medical or dental services.

The prison has a 14-bed infirmary and outpatient medical facility with capabilities for x-ray, EKG, lab, IV therapy and minor surgical operations. A three-chair dental clinic is staffed on a full-time basis.

Inmates may participate in the New Direction substance abuse treatment program. New Direction provides intensive inpatient treatment in a fast-moving 28-day treatment cycle with lectures, films, educational and therapy groups, as well as individual counseling. Inmates work with professional staff and peer counselors. New Direction relies heavily on the principles of Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous with group meetings available in the evenings.

Correction Enterprises operates a reupholstery plant at Piedmont. Three Enterprises employees supervise inmates. Other inmates may work as maintenance or kitchen help.

The institution provides vocational classes in woodworking, auto mechanics and auto body repair. A literacy computer lab, adult education classes and a course to prepare for the GED are available.

HISTORY – Piedmont opened in 1980 as a medium security prison for adult males, but was converted to close security because of the state's need for additional high-security space. In 1995, Piedmont reverted to housing medium custody adult male inmates.

Legislators provided for a dormitory addition as part of the $62.1 million prison construction program authorized in 1994. This construction was completed in 1995. In December 2009, the prison consolidated with the former Rowan Correctional Center, which added a minimum-security unit with 276 beds.

All visits are by appointment only by calling (704) 797-4485 or (704) 797-4486. Appointments can be made Monday-Friday from 8 – 11 a.m. and 1 – 3 p.m., except on state holidays. All appointments must be made 3-14 days in advance.  Processing inmates have a 21 day waiting period before they are eligible for visits. Visits can take place on the following days: Medium Facility Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday: 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Saturday: 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. and 7:30-8:30 p.m. Minimum facility 3 visitors are allowed to visit an inmate. Visiting schedule the last name starts with A-F – 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Saturday G-L – 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Saturday M-R – 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Sunday S-Z – 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Sunday restricted housing visits must be scheduled Mon. -Fri. by appointments only.  The visitation office may be reached at 704-797-4485 or Ext. 4486. Mon. – Fri. 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Shoes – Must be closed toed shoes (No Flip Flops or Stilettos will be permitted).

Visits can take place on the following days:

• Saturday: 8 – 9 a.m,, 1 – 2 p.m, and 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.

SRG and Control Status Inmates (non-contact): Thursday:  9 – 10 a.m. and 2 – 3 p.m. 

DIRECTIONS – Take I-85 to Salisbury and exit onto Webb Road (Exit 70). Take Webb Road west to NC 29, where you will see a stoplight. Go through the stoplight until you come to a stop sign. Go straight and the prison is approximately one-half mile on the right.
