The inmates housed at Wilkes CC located at 404 Statesboro Rd in North Wilkesboro, NC are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Wilkes Correctional Center, near North Wilkesboro, is a minimum security prison for adult males that houses 262 adult males. Offenders at this facility are housed in dormitories.
Wilkes Correctional Center allows inmates to work in a variety of jobs both on and off institutional grounds. Some of the on site jobs include food services andcustodial and building maintenance. Off site jobs include community work squads and road crews. Additionally, inmates who are close to parole or nearing the end of their sentence may qualify for the work release program which allows the inmate to report to a job in the surrounding community during the day and return to the prison at the end of their shift.
Wilkes Community College works with the prison to provide classes in computers and life skills training. Classes for adult education and preparation for the GED tests are available. Inmates may also take a course on substance abuse and drug abuse education programs. Inmates work in a number of jobs. They may be assigned to community work squads, Department of Transportation road crews or as maintenance or kitchen help at the prison. Inmates nearing parole may participate in work release, leaving the prison for part of the day to work for a business in the community.
HISTORY – Wilkes was one of 51 county prisons for which the state assumed responsibility with the passage of the Conner Bill in 1931. It was one of 61 field unit prisons renovated or built during the late 1930s to house inmates who worked building roads. The prison's original dormitory is still in use. A modular dormitory added in 1977 has since been closed. The General Assembly provided three 50 bed dormitories for Wilkes as part of the $87.5 million prison construction program authorized in 1993.

DIRECTIONS
From Raleigh: I-40 West to Winston-Salem. Take exit 188 (US 421 Yadkinville) to Wilkes County. Take exit 282 (NC 115 North Wilkesboro) Turn right at top of the exit. Go about 2.5 miles and the facility is located on the left.
From WNC: Take I- 40 East to NC 16 North (Newton-Taylorsville exit) Stay on NC 16N through Taylorsville and exit onto US 421 South in Wilkes County. Go to the second exit (282, NC 115 N. Wilkesboro-Statesville).Turn left onto NC 115 North. Go about 2.5 miles and the facility is located on the left.
From the South: Take I- 77 North to exit 73. Follow US 421 North to Wilkes County. Take exit 282 (NC 115 North Wilkesboro) Turn right at top of the exit. Go about 2.5 miles and the facility is located on the left.
