NV DOC – Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC) basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 775-887-9297
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Northern Nevada Correctional located at 1721 E Snyder Ave in Carson City, NV are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
NNCC is a medium custody state prison that houses about 1,620 adult male inmates. Offenders are housed in one of ten housing units and can receive on-site medical and mental health treatment. Northern Nevada Correctional Center is part of the prison industries program that manufactures a variety of products in an upholstery shop, paint shop, woodshop, and metal shop. Offenders who work in these shops can earn a menial wage while incarcerated. Offenders at Northern Nevada Correctional Center can participate in the OASIS substance abuse treatment which is an intensive 9-12 month program. Inmates can also receive vocational training in automotive repair, dry cleaning and computer technology. Additionally, offenders can earn a GED, learn to read, and take college classes offered through Western Nevada Community College.
Current vocational programs are auto mechanics/auto shop, computer and dry cleaning. Educational services are conducted by Carson School District staff and include high school diploma, GED, Literacy programs and English as a Second Language. College courses are available and are provided through Western Nevada Community College. OASIS is a 9 to 12 month drug and alcohol rehabilitation program which contains 170 inmate participants. SSLP (Senior Structured Living Program) is available to those inmates 60 and over and has 120 inmates participating. The New Beginnings program is offered to prepare inmates for reintegration into society. A wide range of self-help and treatment programs are available and are administered by medical, mental health and program staff.
Prison Industries – Silver State Industries includes a woodshop, metal shop, paint shop and upholstery. They manufacture a variety of products for governmental agencies and private entities. The Print Shop and Bookbindery is now located at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center
Vocational Training
More than 78% of inmates come to prison with minimal job training. Vocational skills are taught to Nevada inmates by the school districts and colleges, prison industries, and the Nevada Division of Forestry. Inmates can learn culinary skills, construction trades, animal science, fire-fighting, auto mechanics and restoration, business and management, equipment repair, HVAC installation and repair, welding, furniture manufacturing, dry cleaning, computer skills and more. Inmates may also get prison jobs as clerks, cooks, janitors, maintenance workers, landscapers, construction crews and other such positions that provide them on-the-job training.
Incentives for Inmates
Nevada law provides incentives for offenders to earn an education while incarcerated; among these incentives is the application of educational credits toward the reduction of sentences. An offender, who earns a certificate, educational or vocational, while behind bars, may qualify to expedite his/her release date.
Reducing Recidivism
When combined with other rehabilitative programs, education is a powerful factor in reducing recidivism. Rigorous study gives offenders the intellectual leverage they need to revise their view of themselves and leave prison better equipped to contribute positively to their families and communities. Education has been the longest running and most successful rehabilitative program in our prison history.
