This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Coxsackie Correctional Facility located at 11260 Route 9 W in Coxsackie, NY are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Coxsackie Correctional Facility is a maximum security state prison in Coxsackie, Greene County, New York houses about 900 male inmates under the supervision of the New York State Department of Corrections.
Coxsackie Correctional Facility is located in Greene County New York. Inmates may receive alcohol and substance abuse treatment if they suffer from addiction, and can attend classes to receive an adult basic education and GED.
Coxsackie Correctional Facility offers inmates vocational training in computers, building and custodial maintenance, culinary arts, electrical, masonry, plumbing and heating, welding, printing, and painting. Additionally, this Coxsackie CF participates in the Correctional Industries and is responsible for running a garment shop that employs select inmates.
The prison opened in 1935 as the New York State Vocational Institution, with buildings designed by Alfred Hopkins, an estate architect with a sideline in prisons such as Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in Pennsylvania was designed on progressive principles, reflected a concern for aesthetics and a sense of places, and had no surrounding walls or fences.
The first inmates received at this institution, generally known as "Coxsackie", were older inmates from the New York House of Refuge which was being closed after serving as a juvenile reformatory since 1825. Coxsackie continued this reformatory function, providing inmates with a program of academic and vocational education. Industrial training is provided in mechanics, machine shop, printing, other trades, and agriculture. For the first ten years of its operation, Coxsackie received inmates by the direct commitment from the courts. Since 1945, with the opening of the Elmira Reception Center, Coxsackie has received nearly all its inmates from this center.
