NYSDOC – Great Meadow Correctional Facility basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 518-639-5516
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Great Meadow Correctional Facility located at 11739 State Route 22 in Comstock, NY are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Great Meadow Correctional Facility is a maximum security prison in Comstock, a hamlet right outside of Fort Ann, in Washington County, New York, with a daily population of about 1,800 inmates. When Great Meadow opened in 1911 it was the fourth prison for adult males constructed in the state of New York.
When Great Meadow first opened it was home to mostly first time offenders, and therefore it did not need a wall for many years. But as inmate population grew Great Meadows Correctional Facility started receiving second- and third-time offenders from other New York prisons such as Sing Sing and Clinton. Still, without a good wall, many inmates could not be sent to Great Meadow Correctional Facility. In 1924 construction of a 3,000-foot wall began. Four years later, the inmates had successfully finished walling themselves in. The wall encloses just over twenty-one acres. With the completion of building this wall, Great Meadow became a maximum-security facility.
Great Meadow CF offers inmates participation in the Correctional Industries program working in metal furniture manufacturing, and manufacturing cleaning and personal care products.
Inmates must have their GED-equivalent of they are enrolled in classes to complete their degree. Adult basic education courses are available to inmates who require educational advancement.
Vocational classes taught at this facility include computers, building/custodial maintenance, culinary arts, flooring, electrical, masonry, printing, small engine repair, and welding. Inmates who require it may receive on-site sex offender treatment and counseling. Alcohol and substance abuse treatment is also available.
This facility has a dedicated mental health unit, for inmates who are suffering from mental disorders, and segregation unit for inmates who have safety or security concerns.
