NYSDOC – Green Haven Correctional Facility basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 845-221-2711
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Green Haven Correctional Facility located at 594 Route 216 in Stormville, NY are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Green Haven Correctional Facility is a maximum security prison located in the Town of Beekman in Dutchess County, NY under the supervision of the New York State Department of Corrections.
This prison housed New York's execution chamber during the time the state briefly had the death penalty (but never used it). New York's electric chair "Old Sparky" was moved here from Sing Sing Correctional Facility. It was originally a federal prison and now houses maximum-security inmates.
Green Haven Correctional Facility also operates a Hot Kosher Food Program; because of this, the prison has a large Jewish population. Yale Law School operates the Green Haven Prison Project, a series of seminars among Yale law students and Green Haven inmates on law and policy issues concerning prisons and criminal law.
The capacity for the Green Haven CF is around 2,200 inmates who may participate in the Correctional Industries program which allows inmates to work in an upholstery shop and manufacturing furniture. Inmates are offered a chance to earn an adult basic education, GED and can even earn an associate's and bachelor's degree.
Green Haven CF has vocational courses available for inmates to learn barbering, computer technologies and repair, custodial and building maintenance, electrical, printing, painting, and small engine repair. Substance abuse treatment courses and programs like "alternatives to violence" are available and can make a positive change in the inmate's life.
