ODRC – Southern Ohio Correctional Facility (SOCF) basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 740-259-5544
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Southern Ohio Correctional located at 1724 SR 728 in Lucasville, OH are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
SOCF is a maximum security state prison that houses about 1,625 inmates. Southern Ohio Correctional incarcerates some of the most violent and dangerous inmates in the state, some of which are mentally ill. Assaults, fights and high use of force seem to dominate this facility but that is expected with a high-security level of inmates. This facility operates a shoe shop that employs inmates and is part of the correctional industries. Educational opportunities here include adult basic education classes and the ability for inmates to obtain a GED. Additional vocational courses in building maintenance are also available to offenders. This facility allows the use of their land for inmates of Ross Correctional Camp to farm. The food that is cultivated is donated to the Scioto County Homeless Shelter. Outpatient treatment for substance abuse is also available to inmates.
Unique Programs
ADAP Cognitive Behavioral Treatment Program was developed and designed for inmates while incarcerated to receive intensive outpatient care for drug/alcohol abuse. The 12-week program focuses on the implementation of cognitive and behavioral therapy through education to abolish dependency.
Reading Room – The reading rooms encourage family literacy by providing a pleasant and comfortable setting for both child and incarcerated parent. Each room is stocked with a wide variety of children’s books and has an inmate narrator who reads to the visiting children twice a day. The role of the inmate narrator is to read picture books to the children in much the same manner that children’s hour would be done at a public library. A variety of arts and craft supplies for the children are also available in most of the rooms. Many of the supplies and books are donated by employees and service organizations.
