OK DOC – James Crabtree Correctional Center (JCCC) basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 580-852-3221
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Crabtree Correctional located at 216 N Murray St in Helena, OK are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
The James Crabtree Correctional Center (JCCC) is a medium-security state prison located in Helena OK. JCCC holds up to 1,175 male inmates (the majority are incarcerated for violent offenses) and also has a minimum-security unit with about 200 adult males. The facility’s history predates statehood. Built in 1904, it served as a high school, junior college, orphanage, and training school for boys before becoming a prison in 1982.
Inmates are housed in open dormitories. Minimum custody inmates are allowed to work within the institution in supportive roles like facility maintenance, custodial work, food serving/preparation, and farming. JCCC minimum work in the 15-acre garden will grow and cultivate cucumbers, okra, squash, melons, onions, garlic, and turnips. The food grown by the offenders is consumed by the offenders as well. Excess vegetables are frozen to be consumed in the winter months. Inmates may also work in the surrounding community on public works and road crews.
Programs
Education
Most inmates lack education, a key component in avoiding re-incarceration. JCCC offers literacy courses as well as Pre-High School Equivalency and High School Equivalency diplomas.
College courses (not provided through state funding) are also available to inmates who can pay for them, or those who have alternative funding or scholarships.
Substance Abuse Treatment
For those inmates who need substance abuse treatment, JCCC teaches them ways to avoid relapse, while also helping develop cognitive, social, emotional and coping skills.
Criminal Thinking
JBCC offers Thinking for a Change, Moral Reconation Therapy, and Associates 4 Success programs to address thinking, judgment errors, and relationships linked with criminal thinking/behavior.
JCCC provides inmates with work opportunities through correctional industries and institutional support. JCCC also provides inmates with educational opportunities, cognitive behavioral treatment, anger management and re-entry services to prepare them for returning to society.
