The Rio Arriba County Detention Center is a medium-security detention center located at 2 Main St
PO Box 98 Tierra Amarilla, NM which is operated locally by the Rio Arriba County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Rio Arriba County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Tierra Amarilla Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

Rio Arriba County Adult Detention Facility – Visitation

The Rio Arriba County Adult Detention Facility shall serve as the primary housing facility for all adult inmates alleged or sentenced for the commission of an act or acts contrary to the laws or ordinances governing the communities of Rio Arriba and surrounding areas.

Within this purpose, the detention facility staff shall ensure that the facility is an integral part of the Criminal Justice System providing a safe, humane and secure environment for the residents, staff and authorized visitors in the facility as feasible within the existing structure.

In keeping with the concept that the majority of the residents have not been convicted of a crime, it is incumbent that all the residents be provided the respect, dignity and constitutional privileges afforded to all citizens of the community. It shall also be incumbent on this department that the residents, staff and citizens of the community are provided with the security required to ensure maximum safety.
