SD DOC – Rapid City Minimum Unit basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 605-394-5294
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Rapid City Minimum Unit located at 2317 Creek Dr in Rapid City, SD are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
The Rapid City Community Work Center is a minimum-security male facility under the direction of the Mike Durfee State Prison. This facility houses adult males and provides all offenders with mental health, medical, and dental treatment. Additionally, some inmates at the Rapid City Minimum Unit will qualify for the work-release program. The work-release program allows the inmate to leave the facility during the day to work a job in the surrounding community, and to return to the prison at the end of their shit. Work release plays a vital role in preparing the inmate for discharge as it gives them a financial foundation and a higher level of responsibility. Additional supervised job opportunities are available to offenders and include firefighting, working with timber, and other community services
On a daily basis, inmates work on community service projects such as firefighting or helping thin timber in the Black Hills. Other inmates are on work release status, working in the community for various businesses. Parolees in the Community Transition Program are also housed there.
The state Department of Health provides medical, dental and optometric services for the adult corrections system. Correctional Health
