This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at SD State Penitentiary located at 1600 North Dr in Sioux Falls, SD are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
South Dakota State Penitentiary houses approximately 690 adult male offenders on 30 acres and is the home to the state's most dangerous and violent criminals including death row inmates (the facility carries out death sentences in the state's only lethal injection execution chamber.). The facility is operated by the SD Department of Corrections located in Sioux Falls and is also responsible for operating the Jameson Annex which is comprised of four housing units. The main Penitentiary facility contains three housing units.
The Jameson Annex contains three housing units within a secure perimeter and a Community Work Center for inmates on work release and community service status and parolees in the Community Transition Program, which is located outside the perimeter fence. The Penitentiary participates in the prison industries program and employs inmates in an upholstery shop, a sign and decal shop, a printing shop, manufacturing license plates, in a bookbindery, and a machine shop. Prisoners can also work in supportive positions inside the prison providing custodial services, facility maintenance, and kitchen/culinary work. Inmates here are provided mental health, dental and medical services to all inmates. Additionally, inmates can receive substance abuse treatment and sex offender treatment/therapy. Inmates who do not currently possess a diploma can take adult basic education courses, literacy and GED classes.
