The inmates housed at Yankton Minimum Unit located at 178 Mickelson Dr in Yankton, SD are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
The Yankton Community Work Center is a minimum-security state corrections facility for about 275 adult male inmates, operated as a satellite unit to the Mike Durfee State Prison. Inmates here can participate in community service projects, provide daily support services to the Human Services Center, and may be eligible for the work-release program which allows inmates to report to a job in the surrounding community during the day and back to the prison at the end of their shift. Parolees in the Community Transition Program are also housed there. The program offers inmates a higher level of responsibility and a financial foundation for their release. All inmates can take GED courses, receive alcohol and substance abuse treatment, and participate in many recreational activities. Also, all offenders are provided with dental and medical treatment during their incarceration. Worship services for various religions are offered through the Chaplain's office. Yankton Minimum Unit also participates in the Long Distance Parenting Program that provides multiple opportunities for inmates to have greater involvement in their child's lives while in prison.
The state Department of Health provides medical, dental and optometric services for the adult corrections system. Correctional Health.
