Sherburne County Jail (ICE) is a regional jail facility that handles the intake from the Sherburne County Sheriff's arrests but also from several surrounding counties located at 13880 Business Ctr Dr Elk River, MN. This cooperative prison is funded by all of the counties that hold their detainees and sentenced inmates.
The Sherburne County Jail is a major regional facility with housing for 732 inmates. The majority of bed space is rented to the federal government and generates significant revenue used to reduce the overall cost of law enforcement to the county and its residents. Included in the inmate population are inmates under the control of Sherburne County, Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Federal U.S. Marshal, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and other agencies.
Inmate Mail – All mail coming into the Sherburne County Jail will be processed through the U.S. Postal Service. All correspondence and paperwork that requires an inmate's signature must be delivered through the U.S. mail. Inmate mail will be checked for contraband prior to distribution.
Examples of items considered to be contraband are:
- Letters or pictures written in crayon or gel pens
- Stickers, glitter, glue
- Gang graffiti or symbols that could be considered gang graffiti
- Lewd and lascivious pictures
- Pictures depicting gang signs
- Foreign substances such as lipstick, perfume, glue or other substances.
- Newspapers/Magazines: including small clippings or articles
- Laminated items
- Strings/Ribbons/Magnets
- Blank sheets of paper/envelopes/stamps etc…
- Books must be new, soft cover and from a publisher/vendor only. Books received from any other source will be considered contraband and will be placed in the inmate’s property. Coloring and puzzle books are not allowed.
- Or any other items deemed a threat to the safety and security of the facility.
Mail addressed to an inmate who has been transferred or released will be returned to sender. Incoming certified or registered mail for inmates will be processed as other mail and will be signed for by jail staff.
Jail Fees
- Pay For Stay/Sentenced Medicals
Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 641.12, subdivision 3 allows the County to charge a fee to an offender convicted of a crime for room, board, clothing, medical, dental and other correctional services. The Sherburne County Jail charges $35 per day for Pay for Stay. Medical service incurred by an offender convicted of a crime will be charged back those fees. - Adult Work Crew fees
Individuals sentenced to the Adult Work Crew shall pay a fee.

Jail Features
The total inmate population for 2016 was 5,762: 4,767 were male and 995 were female. The total number of days confined were 211,755.73. Average daily population was 578.57.
- Jail Security: The jail security system was updated in 2016 upgrading cameras and software. The security system is an integrated computer system that integrates all doors, cameras, intercoms, phones and utilities within the jail. It is monitored 24 hours a day by jail staff.
- Correctional Emergency Response Team: Trained in special weapons and tactics to handle minor and major disturbances.
- Medical Unit: The Sherburne County Jail contracts with MEnD medical to meet the inmate medical needs.
- K-9 Team: The jail has a K-9 Officer and narcotics detection dog.
- Licensed Corrections Officers: These are licensed Peace Officers who are trained to work in the jail and provide security to inmates outside the secure facility.
- Classification Team: consisting of one Sgt. and four Corrections Officers used to classify the inmate population and to identify threat groups inside the jail.
- Training Department: consisting of 1 training Sgt and 12 FTO's.

If you need information about a detainee that is housed at this facility, you may call (763) 765-3800 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. When you call, please have the individual’s biographical information ready, including first, last and hyphenated names, any aliases he or she may use, date of birth and country of birth.
Detainees cannot receive incoming calls. If you need to get in touch with a detainee to leave an urgent message, you must call (763) 765-3800 and leave the detainee’s full name, alien registration number and your name and telephone number where you can be reached. The detainee will be given your message.

Sherburne County Jail – Visiting Hours
Inmates will visit with friends and family from a video visitation terminal (example to the right) in their housing unit. Friends and family will visit from a similar visitation terminal in the public visitation room located in the administration lobby of the Sheriff's office. These visits are referred to as onsite or public visitations. The new system will allow visitors to still come to the jail for visitation and it will now also allow friends and family to conduct a remote or at-home visit from home using smartphone/tablet or a computer with a webcam and high-speed internet connection.
- Each inmate is allowed one twenty-minute visit from friends or family members daily at the jail, Monday through Saturday. Inmates can have unlimited remote visits from home.
- Friends and family can schedule visits with inmates during any time visitation is allowed. Public visitation hours are:

- Visits need to be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. You will need to use the website videovisitanywhere.com. You will then create a free user account (if you don't already have one) and submit that for approval by the facility. Once you are approved, you can then log back in and click on Schedule a Visit at the bottom of the page and follow the steps listed.
When you schedule your visit, be sure to write down the following items:- The date and time of your visit
- The six-digit PIN number because you will enter this at the time of your visit
- The video terminal you are assigned to (I.E. Vis_1, Vis_2, etc) Updated 8/7/17

- Each inmate will continue to receive one free onsite visits each day, Monday through Saturday.
- Inmates can now receive unlimited remote/at-home visits each week. At-home visits cost $12.00. There will be an introductory promotional rate of $5.00 for a 20-minute visit through the end of 2017. At-home visits can be scheduled every day of the week from 8:30 am-8:50 pm.
- What do I need to do to visit from home?
You can conduct visits using an Apple or Android phone or tablet. Download the free Securus Visitation app in the App Store or Google Play. You can also use a computer with high speed internet access and a webcam.
You will need to do the following:- Create a visitation account at www.videovisitanywhere.com.
- Request access to visit Sherburne County Jail. Your request is then reviewed by the jail staff.
- Once you are approved to be a visitor, you can then schedule at-home visits.
- Is there anything else I should know?
Here is some other helpful information:- There will be NO age restriction for visitation. However, ALL visitors 17 years of age and under must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. Proof of this will be required before visitation is allowed. (Proof needed will be a Birth Certificate for parents or court papers for legal guardians)
- Photo ID will be required for ALL visitors 10 years of age or older. Acceptable forms of ID will be, but not limited to, Driver's License, State ID cards, School ID, and Military ID. Other forms of photo ID may be accepted if valid.
- Children not allowed to visit may not be left unattended in the lobby.

Professional Visits
Professional visits are allowed throughout the day outside of Lockdown times. You must provide professional identification and state ID for verification. No contraband is allowed, there will be lockers available for you to use outside the secure jail. You will be required to clear the metal detector before the entrance.
The facility may be in Lockdown for any number of reasons throughout the day and without notice.
Regular Lockdown hours are:
- 11:30am – 12:30pm
- 1:30pm – 2:30pm
- 4:30pm – 5:30pm
- 9:30pm – 8:00am
Sherburne County Jail (ICE) – Friends and Family Visits
Visiting hours at the Sherburne County Jail are as follows:
- Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
- Wednesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
You will not be allowed a video visit unless you are on the detainee’s visitation list. Detainees may change the list every 30 days and are allowed up to 5 visits per day. To check if you are on the list you must call during business hours. Visitors are allowed one 20 minute visit per day. Visitors must have a valid government issues ID or passport. Visitors may leave cash for detainees Monday – Friday during morning and afternoon sessions only. Money orders and checks will not be accepted. The visitation area is located at the southwest end of the building, please look for signs indicating video visitation.
Visitors must be 18 years of age or older, or accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. All visitors must possess valid identification or a driver's license at the time of visiting. All visitors must be on the inmate's approved visitors list.
Adult visitors must present a valid, verifiable government-issued identification card to enter the facility.
Minors who are visiting the facility must be accompanied by an adult guardian (18 years or older). Minors must not be left unaccompanied in the waiting room, visiting room or any other area.
Attorney Visits
Legal representatives of detainees are authorized to visit their clients during the following hours:
Attorneys and/or paralegals may visit detainees Monday through Friday from 8 AM – 9:30 PM.
A list of pro bono (free) legal organizations will be posted in all detainee housing units and other appropriate areas. This list shall be updated quarterly. If a detainee wishes to see a representative or paralegal from that organization, it is the detainee’s responsibility to contact them for an appointment.
Consular Visits
Consular officials may meet with their detained nationals at any time. It is requested that prior arrangements be made with the ICE Supervisory Deportation Officer to the extent possible, and that consular officials bring appropriate credentials when they come to the facility. Clergy Visits
Clergy may visit detainees at any time, but must make prior arrangements with the Chaplain’s Office.
Visiting Restrictions
- All family or other social visits are non-contact.
- No firearms or weapons of any kind are permitted in the facility.
- If visitors are or appear to be intoxicated, visitation will not be allowed.
- All visitors are subject to search while in the facility.
- Visitors are not allowed to pass or attempt to pass any items to detainees.
- Visitors are not allowed to carry any items into the visitation area.
Search Procedures (prior to or during all visitations)
All individuals requesting admittance to the facility or the visitation area are subject to a pat-down search of their person, an inspection of their belongings, and a metal scan search. Individuals refusing to cooperate with a reasonable search will not be admitted. No firearms or weapons of any kind are permitted. No electronic devices (cell phones, pagers, radios, etc.) are permitted in the secure areas of this facility.
