The Sonoma County Main Adult Detention (MADF) is a medium-security detention center located at 2777 Ventura Ave Santa Rosa, CA which is operated locally by the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Sonoma County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Santa Rosa Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
The Detention Division's goals in support of this mission are:
- To comply with California Minimum Jail Standards and all other applicable federal, state, and local laws and the standards set forth by the California Medical Association;
- To apply the principles of direct supervision as developed by the National Institute of Corrections;
- To develop and support staff through constructive supervision, leadership and training, and maintenance of high employment standards;
- To offer inmates an opportunity for rehabilitation through participation in religious, educational, recreational, vocational, and work programs;
- To release inmates back into the community in better condition medically & psychologically than when they came into custody;
- To manage our resources in a professional, efficient, and cost-effective manner;
- To foster a custodial environment that supports positive inmate behavior and provides discipline for misconduct.

Sonoma County Main Adult Detention – Visitation
Non-Contact Visiting:
- Inmates booked with the last name beginning with A-L will visit on Saturday and Monday for all visiting times. There will also be a half-day visiting on Wednesday. Visiting times on Wednesday for A-L will be 10:15 am, 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 1:40 pm, 2:20 pm, and 3:00 pm.
- Inmates booked with the last name beginning with M-Z will visit on Sunday and Tuesday for all visiting times. There will also be a half-day visiting on Wednesday. Visiting times on Wednesday for M-Z will be 4:25 pm 7:00 pm, 7:45 pm, 8:30 pm, 9:15 pm, and 9:50 pm
- The following holidays will have visiting, and the hours will follow the Wednesday schedule: New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day
- THERE WILL BE NO VISITING ON THURSDAY or FRIDAY.
- All visits are ½ hour in duration.
- Inmates may receive one visit per visitation day.
- Module Workers are eligible to receive two 30-minute visits per day on their visiting day. Visits can be consecutive if time and space permits.

Attire:
- Shorts, skirts and dresses must be as long as the bottom of the fingertips when arms are placed atside.
- No bare midriffs or low-cut tube tops, or revealing tops.
- No tank tops
- No sports team attire or gang insignias.
- No bandanas, beanies, hairnets or hats.
- No steel-toed boots or shoes that will not clear the metal detector.
If you are unsure about your attire’s acceptability, you want to dress as if you were going to court. Final determination of clothing will be made by Lobby staff.
General Information:
- Visitors may only fill two seats in the visiting booths. Small children (40 inches or smaller) may be held on a visitor’s lap. Children over 40 inches must occupy a seat and will be counted as a visitor as required by occupancy rating.
- All visitors, 18 years and older, must have a valid and current California Driver’s License, California Identification Card, Driver’s License/ID from another state, Passport, Military ID, Consular Card or Immigration Card. No other forms of ID will be accepted.
- Minors (age 17 and under) Adults with minors must supervise them at all times. If the adult visitor is the minor’s parent, they must bring the minor’s birth certificate. If the adult visitor is a legal guardian, they must present court papers showing they are the legal guardian. If the adult visitor is neither the parent or legal guardian, they must provide a notarized letter from a parent or legal guardian permitting the visit along with the minor’s birth certificate or official court document. Emancipated minors are allowed to visit with original court documentation as proof of emancipation. Photocopies of the above documents are not acceptable.
- Convicted felons who wish to visit must have prior written approval from the Facility Manager or their designee.
- If you are a recently released inmate of the Detention Division, you must wait for 30days from the day of your release before returning to visit unless you are visiting your spouse. Items Allowed: Locker or Vehicle key or remote, visitor’s pass, eyeglasses, baby-bottle if needed (must clear metal detector) and any emergency medications. Items Not Allowed: Weapons of any kind, cigarettes, lighters, full sets of keys, knives, cell phones, hats, excessive jewelry, toys, and writing implements. Visitors are required to secure all of their property in the lockers provided in the lobby or in their vehicles, use is at own risk. Visitors must be able to clear the metal detector to visit. Lockers are cleared nightly after visiting. Any items left in a locker after visiting hours are complete will be disposed of. Any person who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or any controlled substance will not be allowed to visit. Appropriate behavior and conduct will be required at all times.
FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE RULES MAY RESULT IN A LOSS OF VISITING PRIVILEGES.
