State Correctional Institution – SCI Laurel Highlands basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 814-445-6501

This facility is for adult inmates.

The inmates housed at SCI Laurel Highlands located at 5706 Glades Pike in Somerset, PA are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

SCI Laurel Highlands is a minimum-security state prison primarily houses about 1,550 adult male inmates who have special needs including long term personal medical care, inmates who are on dialysis or bound to a wheelchair, and geriatric offenders. This facility also houses general population in nine housing units. Some of the housing units are open dormitory while others are multi and single-occupancy cells. This facility offers a higher amount of medical care when compared to other correctional facilities in the state.

The facility occupies the former Somerset State Hospital property which was owned by the Department of Public Welfare, and which officially closed June 1996. The property was transferred from the Department of Public Welfare to the Department of Corrections in 1996.
