The Steuben County IN Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 206 E Gale St Angola, IN which is operated locally by the Steuben County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Steuben County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Angola Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

The Steuben County Jail in Angola IN was constructed in 1992. The facility was originally designed to hold up to 130 inmates but has since been modified to house 178 inmates.

Medical Care
The Steuben County Jail provides arrangements for routine health care, as well as twenty-four (24) hour emergency medical, dental and psychological care, to inmates through the services of Quality Correctional Care. The jail nurse screens medical/dental and mental health requests form inmates, consults with the physician and then advises the jail staff on what medical, mental and dental health services need to be provided. Both the doctor and the nursing staff are contracted through Quality Correctional Care.

Religious Services

Religious services are offered to inmates throughout the week through the coordinated efforts of the Jail Chaplain and the Steuben County Jail Ministry volunteer team. Bible study, church services and one-on-one clergy visits are scheduled on various days throughout the week. Volunteers are required to submit an application and undergo a background check before they are approved to volunteer through the Jail Ministry. In addition, training is offered and required throughout the year to enhance each volunteer’s understanding of serving the incarcerated. Clergy members wishing to schedule visits with a particular inmate are encouraged to contact the Jail Chaplain or Jail Commander for information on a Ministry/Clergy Application.

Educational Services

Inmates who have not yet received their high school diploma, or equivalency of a High School diploma, may request to participate in educational services provided in the Steuben County Jail. The Educational Services Program is currently made possible through collaborative efforts of the Steuben County United Way, Steuben County Literacy Coalition and the Impact Institute. Volunteer tutors are subject to a background check and training in order to provide these services to inmates. The Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) exam may be offered to inmates once they are pre-screened and prepared by the tutors. Inmates are responsible for the cost of the exam.

Commissary

Commissary is available to inmates twice each week. Inmates may purchase items from the commissary store using a cash account. Funds may be provided for inmates by clicking he following link accesscorrections.com/#/ or by using a money order or with the cash brought in with them at time of their booking. Money orders may be sent into an inmate via the Postal Service or dropped off for inmates at the Jail Central lobby window. Money orders must include the name of the inmate and the name of the purchaser. All funds must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Sunday and Wednesday evenings in order to be used for ordering on these days.

Visitation Guidelines

Regular General Population Inmates:
Saturday & Sunday

• 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
• 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
• 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
• 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.  
• 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
• 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Disciplinary Visiting Hours:
Monday & Friday

• 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Visitors are asked to arrive at thirty minutes prior to the visit and all visits are on a first come basis.  All visitors must present valid identification at each visit.

Acceptable forms of identification are:

a. Any valid state driver’s or DMV issued non-drivers identification

b. Valid military identification

c. Valid passport

d. United States INS (Homeland security) issued ID 

Visitors must register at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the visitation and submit valid photo identification prior to entering the visiting room.

· Visitors will be required to pass through a security screening and may be subject to a physical search to ensure that you don’t possess contraband.

· Visitors that do not successfully pass through the metal detector and / or hand scanner will not be allowed into the visitation room, unless valid and acceptable medical identification card is presented citing the medical condition or hidden disability.

· Visitors are subject to criminal prosecution related to the illegal introduction of contraband into the facility. Do not pass anything to an inmate at any time.

· All visitors must fill out the visitation registration form prior to their initial visit with a particular inmate.

· Visitors providing false identification, addresses or information may be banned from visitation.

· Visitors who appear to be intoxicated or under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be admitted inside the visitation room.

· Acceptable dress codes will be determined by Correctional staff.

· Tight fitting and provocative attire is not acceptable, to include but not limited to:

• Short skirts Short shorts
• Low tops Athletic shorts
• Halter tops Bare feet
• Tube tops Bathing suits
• Tank tops Outer Jackets
• Backless blouses or dresses Sweatshirts with hoods
• See-through clothing “Spaghetti” straps less than 1 inch in width ÿ Bare midriffs Plunging necklines

· Unacceptable clothing, jewelry and assorted items:

• Hair pins Bras with metal wiring
• Headbands or head wraps Hats
• Pens or pencils Knives
• Cellular telephones Recording device or any kind
• Jewelry that activates metal detector
• Personal medications are not allowed in unless you have written documentation from your physician that it could harm your health if you don’t have them. Medications that are allowed in will stay with the Visitation Officer.

· All visitors must follow all Correction Officer directives. The immediate termination of a visit may occur if all rules and regulations are not followed, including verbal directives.

• All money for inmates, excluding bail or fines, will be sent through the mail or deposited into the inmate kiosk in the front lobby of the Public Safety Building.
• A brief kiss is allowed only at the beginning and end of the visit. Groping or inappropriate touching between the inmate and the visitor(s) is prohibited.
• Profanity or abusive language is not allowed.
• No yelling or loud conversations.
• No visiting between groups. · Once you are seated you must stay seated until your visit is finished.
• Children will stay with the visiting parent or legal guardian and must remain under control at all times. Children must stay on the visitor’s side.
• No more than two visitors at one time with a maximum number of two visits per week unless the inmate is assigned to an inmate worker program.
• Children will not be left in the lobby or unattended anywhere on the property without the supervision of their parent and or legal guardian.
• Persons under the age of eighteen (18) will not be allowed visitation unless accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. Proof of guardianship is required
