This facility is for adult inmates.
The Stone County MO Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 110 S Maple St Galena, MO which is operated locally by the Stone County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Stone County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Galena Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
INMATE MAIL
1. OUTGOING MAIL:
- An officer collects outgoing mail nightly during bedtime medication pass only.
- Outgoing mail is not to be sealed by the inmate. The mail is logged and placed in the department’s outgoing mail.
NOTE: ALL OUTGOING MAIL TO PERSONS OTHER THAN AN INMATE'S LICENSED ATTORNEY, DOCTOR OR ORDAINED CLERGYMAN IS SUBJECT TO INSPECTION BY JAIL PERSONNEL.
- Articles other than letters in an envelope will be considered contraband and not be mailed. The inmate will be given the opportunity the redo the envelope and at that time the envelope will be mailed.
- Letters that have drawings on the envelopes will not be sent out to the post office. They WILL be returned to the inmate. The Postal Service indicates that such drawings cause problems with the sorting equipment.
- Inmates will not send mail to another inmate in this facility.
- Mail will not be accepted for mailing without proper return and destination address.
- Mail to judges, prosecuting attorney’s, and other court offices can be hand-delivered by jail staff. To correspondence through the U.S. Postal Service, you must have a stamp(s), return and destination address on the face of the envelope.
2. INCOMING MAIL:
- All incoming mail will be logged the day it arrives and passed out after 5:00 am daily Tuesday – Saturday. Postage stamps are removed to prevent bleaching and reuse.
- Mail will be logged, opened and inspected for contraband articles that might be enclosed (see subsection 3: Mail Limitations). The only exception to this is correspondence from attorneys, judges, or congressmen, which will be opened and inspected by an officer in the presence of the inmate. Any incoming mail containing items of contraband will be returned to the sender, provided it is not of an unlawful nature.
- Stamps can be received in the mail. Peel and Stick Stamps are the only type of stamps to be possessed by inmates. No more than 40 stamps will be allowed in the inmates’ possession at any given time. Inmates will be required to sign a receipt for stamps. Incoming envelopes will be stamped “with” or “without” stamps after inspection of an envelope by the Inspecting Officer.
- Due to limited storage areas, packages will not be accepted into the jail. Instead, the packages will be refused and returned to sender.
NO CHRISTMAS OR BIRTHDAY PACKAGES WILL BE ACCEPTED IN THE MAIL.
- Mail received for inmates who have been released from custody will be returned to sender.
- Mail received that does not have a sender’s name on it will not be accepted. Mail received that does not have any return address will be placed into the inmate’s property unopened.
- Inmates will not receive mail to another inmate in this facility.
- No computer-generated material will be accepted in the Stone County Jail. (Personal Computer)
3. MAIL LIMITATIONS:
A. LETTERS:
- Letters that contain scent (powder or liquid), hair and/or foreign substance, Polaroid pictures, etc., will be returned to sender.
- Letters need to be written in blue or black ink.
B. PHOTOGRAPHS:
- No Polaroid photos will be allowed. Photographs may be no larger than 4 X 6 inches (jumbo prints). No more than 10 photos per inmate.
- Pornographic pictures or photographs are not allowed;
- Exchanges of photographs with those in his / her property will not be allowed.
- No photographs are to be affixed to cell walls or fixtures.
- Violations will result in confiscation of the photographs.
C. MAGAZINES:
- No magazines allowed inside cell blocks.
- Only religious study guides provided by the jail visiting minister will be allowed.
D. HOLIDAY CARDS
- No cards will be accepted, cards will be returned to sender.

Personal Visitation – Personal visitations are conducted on a schedule, which is determined by the Sheriff and Jail Administrator. The allotted times for each block will be posted in each block. The rules for visitation are as follows:
- Visits are 30 minutes per inmate (2 visitors per inmate, or 1 adult with two minor children)
- All visitors' coats, purses, keys, tobacco products, are to be left outside the jail area
- If the Officer suspects contraband is being brought into the jail, they may request a body search of the visitor. If the visitor rejects this request they will not be allowed to visit.
NOTE – No person shall knowingly deliver or attempt to deliver, have in their possession, deposit or conceal in the premises of the Stone County Jail:
- Any controlled substance;
- Any contraband or article or item of personal property which an inmate is prohibited by law or the Stone County Jail Rules from receiving or possessing, including but not limited to any tobacco product; or
- Any gun, knife, weapon or other articles of personal property that could endanger the safety of inmates, employees, or jail institution security; or
- Any other item, article, or substance prohibited by Missouri state statute or the jail.
- Anyone involved in a case in which the inmate is charged will not be allowed to visit unless approved by the Sheriff and Jail Administrator
- No person(s) known to be on probation/parole or awaiting trial on criminal charges may visit
- No person(s) that have been processed out of the jail in the last six months may visit.
- The time of visits is at the discretion of the officer conducting visitation in accordance with the jail population and the number of visitors.
- Any persons coming to the jail for visitation will only be allowed one visit. Visiting multiple inmates is not permitted
