The Union County NJ Juvenile Detention Center is a medium to low-security detention center located at 1075 Edward St Linden, NJ that is operated locally by the Juvenile Justice Department and holds youths awaiting the determination of punishment for the crimes which they are accused. Most of the adolescents are here for less than two years.
Providing a thorough and efficient education at the Union County Juvenile Detention Center is a joint effort between the Union County Educational Services Commission and the County of Union. The students receive four and one-half hours of instruction in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Health/Physical Education. The students receive instruction in accordance with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The curriculum is flexible, allowing for a seamless transition whether the student returns to their original public school, enters a Juvenile Justice Commission program or a Department of Children and Families program.
The teaching staff approaches education in a non-traditional manner, as many of our students need to re-connect with their academic studies. Classes are instructed with behavioral expectations often exceeding public school expectations, while allowing for individual learning styles and abilities. Class size averages 8-10 students, allowing for maximal teacher-student interaction. Students deemed eligible receive Title One services daily. Student assemblies are held periodically to expose students to educational and cultural experiences they might not otherwise receive.
Technology is built into the curriculum. Our Media Center allows student access to the Internet for academic experiences. The teachers also instruct the students in essential basic computer competencies. Classrooms and the Media Center are also equipped with SmartBoard Technology and educational cable networks.
The High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) and NJ ASK 8 are administered at the facility, following the public school schedules.
