The USP-Terre-Haute is a federal prison located at 4700 Bureau Rd S in Terre Haute, IN. This federal high security prison is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to hold inmates who have been convicted to and sentenced for a federal crime through the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

The United States Penitentiary, Terre Haute (USP Terre Haute) is a high-security United States federal prison for male inmates in Terre Haute, Indiana. It is part of the Terre Haute Federal Correctional Complex (FCC Terre Haute) and is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the US Department of Justice. USP Terre Haute houses a Special Confinement Unit for male federal inmates who have been sentenced to death as well as the federal execution chamber. Most inmates sentenced to death by the U.S. Federal Government are housed in USP Terre Haute prior to execution, although there are some exceptions. FCC Terre Haute is located in the city of Terre Haute, 70 miles west of Indianapolis.
USP Terre Haute is a Care Level 3 facility, which means that any inmate sent to Terre Haute who has serious health problems that are not major enough to warrant hospitalization is sent to the USP. This facility is also a tobacco-free institution. This part of the FCC contains six housing units. One of the six housing units is a faith-based unit that can house 125 inmates. When the inmates are not working, they are partaking in faith-based activities. All of the inmates in the USP are allotted seven visit-days a month and 300 minutes of telephone time, which they have to use in increments of 30 minutes or less. The inmates housed here can work at UNICOR, which is a prison industry that makes towels and other accessories for the military. Inmates employed here to earn an average of $6.50 to $7.50 a day and some can make up to $12 a day if they are paid by piece as opposed to by the hour.
The federal government designated USP Terre Haute as the site where federal death sentences are carried out, including the establishment of the "Special Confinement Unit," the federal death row for men. There are currently 61 inmates on death row. The federal government chose Terre Haute as the location of the men's death row due to its central location within the US.
Among those most recently executed at USP Terre Haute was Timothy McVeigh (convicted for his responsibility for the Oklahoma City bombing) executed 6-11-2001 and Juan Raul Garza executed 6-19-2001, and Louis Jones, Jr. executed 3-18-2003, Lethal injection is the method of execution used by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Notable inmates currently on death row are Dylann Storm Roof the white supremacist convicted in 2016 of federal hate crimes and firearms charges for committing the Charleston church shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in 2015, during which 9 parishioners were murdered. Marvin Gabrion Convicted in 2002 of the 1997 kidnapping and murder of 19-year-old Rachel Timmerman. Gabrion was the first person to receive a federal death sentence in a non-death penalty state since the federal death penalty was reinstated in 1988. Joseph Edward Duncan Serial child molester and rapist was sentenced to death for a 2005 kidnapping and quadruple murder in Idaho. Alfonso Rodriguez, Jr. a sex offender; convicted in 2006 of interstate kidnapping resulting in death in connection with the 2003 kidnapping, sexual assault and fatal stabbing of university student Dru Sjodin.
Housing: Inmates are housed in four housing units ranging from dormitories with two-person cubicles to two-person cells.
Health Services: Health services include medical and dental sick call, emergency care, medications, annual and bi-annual physical examinations, health promotions and disease prevention programs, and diagnosis and treatment of chronic infectious diseases. Emergency care is available by approaching any staff member. A sick call form must be submitted to Health Services in order for routine care to be rendered.
Psychology Services: All inmates at USP Terre Haute are screened by Psychology Services staff during the first 14 days of admission. Psychology services are offered for behavioral and emotional problems. Inmates confined in special housing units are seen by a psychologist at least once per month, though these interactions usually last less than a minute. There are many alternatives for inmates who have personal problems and desire to correct them, such as self-image groups, anger management, and other voluntary groups. The facility also offers the Challenge Program for inmates who are prone to substance abuse, mental illness, and violence. The Life Connections Program is also offered through Religious Services for inmates who desire to grow as a responsible person.
Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP): USP Terre Haute does not house a Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). The facility does offer the Drug Education class, the Non-Residential Drug Abuse Program (NR-DAP), Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
Education Services: USP Terre Haute provides GED, English-as-a-Second Language (ESL), parenting, and Adult Continuing Education (ACE) programs. High school diplomas and post-secondary programs are available through paid correspondence programs.
Vocational Training: USP Terre Haute offers vocational training in Computer Applications.
Apprenticeship: USP Terre Haute offers apprenticeships in Baker, Barbering, Cook, Housekeeping, Office Manager, and Tutor.
Library Services: The Reference Library provides nonfiction materials and reference books for inmates pursuing studies in specific areas. The TRULINCS Electronic Law Library is located in the Education Department and in the Special Housing Unit. The library contains a variety of legal reference materials for use in preparing legal papers. Inmates can also check out fiction books, newspapers, and magazines from the library.
UNICOR: The USP Terre Haute UNICOR facility produces clothing and textiles.
Commissary: The total value of an inmate’s accumulated commissary purchases (except for postage stamps, copy cards, and over-the-counter medications) is limited to $360.00. Special limits may apply. Commissary items such as food, drinks, electronics, ice cream, and shoes are available.
Recreation Services: Programs include indoor and outdoor activities, and range from individualized arts and crafts programs to intramural team sports such as softball, basketball, and volleyball. Physical fitness and weight reduction programs are also available. Hobbycraft programs at USP Terre Haute include activities such as painting, leather, and art.
