The Walton County FL Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 796 Triple “G” Road Defuniak Springs, FL which is operated locally by the Walton County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Walton County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Defuniak Springs Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.

Walton County FL Jail – Inmate Handbook

The jail is a 596 bed facility, which was constructed in 2007. All jail operations were moved to the new facility in April 2007 from the 101 bed facility located downtown. The jail consists of an Administration building, Video Visitation area, Central Booking, Medical Housing Unit, Food Services section, Laundry Services section and two inmate housing pods; Housing 1 consist of 264 beds and housing 2 has 316 beds. The Medical Unit has 16 available beds.

The Department consists of three divisions each commanded by a Lieutenant; the Operations Division, the Support Division and the Judicial Services Division. The Operations Division is responsible for the booking and housing of the inmate population. The Support Division is responsible for medical services, court services, food service, transportation, classification and inmate programs. The Judicial Services Division is responsible for court security, warrants, and civil process.

It is the policy of the WCJ that whenever an inmate receives a new or clean item, they must turn in an empty container or dirty item. Inmates will be held accountable for all jail issued items. Any property that is lost, altered, or destroyed will result in the inmate’s account being charged the current replacement cost and/or disciplinary action.

No inmates are allowed out of their bunk area without the full uniform being worn. Uniforms will be worn with the pants around the waist and the shirt on the shoulders.

PERSONAL HYGIENE

The Walton County Jail provides inmates with the initial issue of the following personal hygiene items. 1. Comb (1) 2. Toothbrush (1) 3. Toothpaste (1) 4. Bar of soap (3) 5. Deodorant (1) 6. Shampoo (1) 7. Toilet Paper 8. Feminine hygiene items, as appropriate These items shall be turned into the detention deputy upon release

Inmates must purchase these items from commissary after initial issue. Indigent inmates can still receive hygiene and postal kits during commissary order. Indigent inmate’s will still be debited for these items, but will not be refused these items because they have no money.

Inmates are required to shower at a minimum twice (2 times) per week. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action.

Barber services will be scheduled by security staff. Fingernails are not to be grown beyond the tips of the fingers.

Laundry will be done as scheduled by security staff. Each inmate will be issued a laundry loop with an assigned number. Personal items such as socks, undergarments, t-shirts, and thermals may be placed on the laundry loop and laundered at the appropriate time. Each inmate is responsible for their assigned laundry loop. If the loop is broken, destroyed or altered in any way the inmate will be charged for the cost of the laundry loop.

LIST OF APPROVED IN-CELL ITEMS

Inmates will be responsible for all items in their cell and/or around their living area. Personal items will be stored in the inmate’s assigned container/bag. Inmates may have the following items:
1. Facility issued items i.e. Uniforms, towels, sheets
2. Twenty (20) personal letters (plus legal materials)
3. Ten (10) pictures- 4×6 or smaller. Pictures must be loose, no frames or albums are allowed. Polaroid’s are not allowed.
4. Two (2) soft covered books
5. One (1) Bible or other religious book
6. One (1) commissary draw
7. General population inmates one set of clogs
8. Some inside Trustees can also have one pair of approved shoes
9. Three (3) pairs of white underpants/panties, NO thongs or bikini panties allowed
10. Three (3) white crew or V-neck t-shirts without pockets
11. Three (3) pairs white socks.
12. Three (3) white bras with NO underwire, sports bras preferred (female inmates) 13. One (1) pair of shorts (sold on commissary)
14. Permitted hygiene items
15. Two (2) radio batteries
16. One (1) Radio with headphones 1. One (1) pair of reading or prescription glasses or contact lenses, no dark lenses, 1 pair
17. Medical devices approved by medical staff (hearing aid, false teeth, etc.)
18. Two (2) white standard thermal tops, NO buttons or pockets (sold on commissary)
19. Two (2) white standard thermal bottoms, No buttons or pockets (sold on commissary)
20. Dentures, but adhesive must be obtained from medical.
21. Plain wedding band with no stones

Walton County FL Jail – Visitation

Visiting Hours

• Free on-site visitation in the lobby every day from
  • 8:00 AM-12:00 PM,
  • 1:00 PM-5:00 PM
  • 6:00 PM-8:00 PM.
• All other visitation done at the jail will be charged normal rates.
• Please schedule your visitation through gettingout.com.
• Visitation sessions can be up to 30 minutes in length.
• Phone calls can be up to 30 minutes in length.

Visitation terminals are located in the lobby of the Walton County Jail. Visitation is on a first-come, first-served basis. All visitors must register and be pre-approved before they visit. The approval process may take up to 24 hours. Walton County Jail will record the visitor’s name, address, relationship to inmate, date and time in and out via Telmate visitations system. FCAC 12.11 

There is a maximum of three (3) visitors allowed per on-site visit. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an immediate family member or legal guardian.

Visitation Rules

On-Site Visitation

• Visitation will be denied if the visitor refuses to comply with the dress code while on site
  • Clothing should be moderate attire
  • Shirt and shoes must be worn when visiting the facility
  • No shorts cut higher than mid-thigh
  • No skirts or dresses that are shorter than knee height
  • Shirts must cover the entire upper torso and not be see-through or tight fitting
  • Pants must be above the waistline so that undergarments are not exposed
  • No clothing marked with offensive or profane words or pictures

• All inmate visitors are subject to warrant checks. Individuals who are court-ordered not to have contact with the inmate will not be allowed to visit. If an attempt to visit is made, that inmate’s visitation privileges may be revoked for all visitors (except legally mandated visits) during that inmate’s period of incarceration.

• Visitors who become rude and/or use vulgar or abusive language while visiting online or in the lobby visitation areas will result in discontinued visitation, and you will be asked to leave the facility. Failure to leave when asked may result in criminal charges.

• Visitors who are unruly or under the visible influence of drugs, alcohol or other mood or mind-altering substance will be denied visitation and will be subject to criminal charges.

• Inmates will be responsible for the behavior of their visitors. Obscene and/or offensive gestures, acts or language is strictly prohibited.

• Previously incarcerated persons will not be allowed to visit within 60 days of their release date. The Director of Jail Operations or his designee can take requests for special circumstance visits.

• The facility reserves the right to refuse the entrance of any person or terminate any visit when deemed necessary to enforce the rules and regulations for the security of the facility.

• Visitors or inmates found in violation of the rules will be subject to temporary or permanent suspension of visiting privileges or other appropriate action.

• Consistent violation of the visitation rules may result in that visitor being banned from visitation permanently.

• Nudity of any kind is NOT permitted. Sexually provocative or suggestive behavior from either party will result in the termination of visitation. Any visitor found to be removing clothing or being sexually explicit will have visitation canceled and possibly result in the termination of all visitation privileges.

• All inmate visitors are subject to warrant checks. Individuals who are court ordered not to have contact with the inmate will not be allowed to visit. If an attempt to visit is made, that inmate’s visitation privilege may be revoked for all visitors (except legally mandated visits) during that inmate’s period of incarceration.

• Visitors who become rude and/or use vulgar, sexual or abusive language while visiting will result in discontinued visitation.

• Inmates will be responsible for the behavior of their visitors. Obscene and/or offensive gestures, acts or language is strictly prohibited.

• The facility reserves the right to terminate any visit when deemed necessary to enforce the rules and regulations for the security of the facility.
