The Washington County TN Detention Center is a medium-security detention center located at 114 W Jackson Blvd Jonesborough, TN which is operated locally by the Washington County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Washington County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Jonesborough Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
The Detention Center houses an average of 110 state inmates and approximately 55 federal inmates and the remainder of the population is pretrial and sentenced county inmates. These include but not limited to persons arrested in Washington County, including the Town of Jonesborough. In addition, those persons arrested by the Johnson City Police Department, Veteran's Administration Police Department, East Tennessee State Public Safety, Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency within Washington County are brought to the Detention Center for processing.
Washington County TN Detention Center – FAQ
The Detention Center has various programs that we are very proud of and will continue them to the best of our ability. They are as follows:
- GED program – a certified teacher comes to the Detention Center twice a week to give inmates classes and when ready to test, we set up with Northeast State Technical Community College for an examination.
- Agape – This program is for the female inmates only. Primarily it teaches about sexual integrity and how to make choices they will not regret.
- Project Hope – HIV/Aids awareness and education.
- Alcoholic Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous Treatment programs.
- Parenting Class – This program is for females only. When inmates are released as part of their probation, it is mandatory that they attend a parenting class, so we have them start while being incarcerated here.
- Women's Group – This program addresses several topics including: women's issues, substance abuse, anger management.

Washington County TN Detention Center – Visitation
Visits improve morale and accelerate adjustment to incarceration. Maintaining ties is also essential if you are to adapt properly upon your release. An adult must accompany any visitor under the age 18. The visitor’s name must be on the approved visitation list filled out by the inmate. Only four names can be placed on this list. The list may be revised or updated every 90 days.
This approved visiting list may contain the following persons:
- Members of the immediate family, including; wife or husband, children 14 years of age or older, parents, stepparents, foster parents, grandparents, brothers or sisters, etc.
- Other relatives including aunts, uncles, in-laws, etc.
- Friends and business associates.
- Any additional persons who may be regarded as having a constructive influence on the inmate.
- Professional visitors (attorneys, probation, parole, etc.)
- Clergy visitors: on Sundays, we have approved religious officials who conduct church services. If you would prefer to see your personal pastor, you may add that person to your visitation list as the fifth visitor. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED MORE THAN FOUR VISITORS; THE FIFTH VISITOR CAN ONLY BE YOUR PERSONAL PASTOR.
Any person on the visitor's list submitted by the inmate, who is considered by the staff to have a harmful effect on the inmate or is found to be a threat to the safety and security of the jail, may be excluded from the approved visitor's list. People who are on probation, parole, or out on bond may be excluded from visiting. Those children or stepchildren of an inmate, you are 14 years of age or older, shall be placed on the inmate’s visitor list and shall be required to comply with the rules and regulations established for adult visitors.
However, those children or stepchildren of an inmate who are 13 years of age or younger, shall be required to comply with the following rules and regulations:
- Said children, who are 13 years of age or younger shall not be required to be placed on the inmate’s visitor list.
- Said children of an inmate must be accompanied by a reasonable adult and if the child(ren) becomes disruptive or unmanageable, they shall be required to leave the jail.
- If the jail personnel have reasonable cause to believe that a child is not the child of an inmate, a birth certificate or other form of proof that the child is, in fact, the child or stepchild of the inmate may be required before further visitation is approved.
Anyone who wishes to visit an inmate will be required to present a valid form of identification. No one will be permitted to visit if it appears he or she is under the influence of alcohol or any form of drugs. Personal property such as handbags, briefcases, luggage, outerwear, and packages will not be allowed inside the Detention Center. All visitors will be required to successfully pass through a metal detector. Lockers are available for storage for all property not allowed in the Detention Center. Any visitor who attempts to provide inmates with contraband will be subject to the revocation of visitation privileges. Every attempt should be made to inform your visitors not to bring any items other than a valid form of identification. This will expedite procedures and avoid any possible embarrassment. During regular visiting hours, nothing will be passed to your from inmates. DRESS CODE – All inmates will be required to wear their full jail-issued clothing at all times while present in the visiting area. A copy of the dress code will be posted in the lobby of the Detention Center. Persons who desire to visit inmates must adhere to certain requirements concerning dress. Visitors will not wear shorts, halter tops, low cut dresses or blouses, tank tops, dresses with slits past the knee, or clothing that is transparent or reveals any body parts. THE DETENTION CENTER RECEPTIONIST WILL HAVE THE FINAL WORD on whether the clothing is appropriate or not. Visitors will not be allowed to wear outer garments such as coats, jackets, and sweaters to the visiting area. Visitors will not be allowed to wear any headgear such as caps, picks, combs, etc. All visitors, including children, must wear proper footwear. It is up to you to notify your visitors of the visitors’ dress code.
VISITING HOURS – You will be allowed to visit with your family in accordance with the rules and regulations set forth by the Detention division. IT WILL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE INMATE to schedule his or her own visitation. Inmates will check with the pod officer for visitation times that are available.
