Washtenaw County Jail basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 734-585-7247
This facility is for adult inmates.
The Washtenaw County Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 2201 Hogback Rd Ann Arbor, MI which is operated locally by the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Washtenaw County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Ann Arbor Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office Community Corrections provides State Public Act 511 (PA511) and locally funded jail and prison diversion programs and sanctioning options for eligible persons at all stages of the criminal justice process.
The facility's role is to reduce the potential to re-offend and to support the safe and appropriate reintegration of offenders into our communities. A collaborative, community-based initiative, we emphasize comprehensive, integrated programs and services that act as an integral part of the Sheriff's Office mission of creating public safety, providing quality service and building strong and sustainable communities.
Community Work Program (CWP)
The CWP is an alternative to incarceration program that substitutes community labor, rather than incarceration, for carefully selected offenders. The Work Program provides service to local municipalities and other non-profit organizations throughout Washtenaw County.
Work Tasks
Individuals sentenced to the CWP engage in a variety of tasks that directly contribute to the community in various ways. Tasks include by way of example but not limitation:
- Roadway trash pickup
- Snow shoveling for the disabled and/or elderly
- General labor
- Food pantry grocery giveaways
- Community event preparation and clean up
- Blight cleanup
- Painting
- Fairgrounds clean up
- Festival set up/clean up
- Youth camp clean up
- Non-profit organization assistance, etc.
- Minimal landscaping
Benefits
- The CWP provides an opportunity for the selected offenders to take responsibility for their actions and contribute their time and effort directly back to the communities that they may have harmed, while retaining their employment and maintaining their family relationships; keys to not re-offending.
- The CWP has and continues to provide significant direct savings to the county by decreasing jail bed days served and reducing or eliminating the cost of public service projects many of which, due to limited resources, might not otherwise be completed.
Snow Removal
The Sheriff Community Work Program also participates in a program that offers snow removal for seniors and people with disabilities. Every year the Work Program assists in clearing snow for approximately 170 households throughout the county. If you are interested in receiving assistance with snow removal from the Community Work Program please call 734-973-4867.
Community Garden
In 2017, the CWP created a community garden and grew 800 pounds of fresh produce and delivered it to a number of local area food banks.

Jail Programs
Jail based programs allow eligible inmates to earn an early release by completing programming in jail. Often, release is contingent upon completion of Public Act 511 aftercare programs in the community. Here is more information on the programs used by Washtenaw County:
In Jail Substance Abuse Treatment Program
Community Corrections manages the funding for an In-Jail Substance Abuse Treatment Program conducted by Dawn Farm, Inc though Public Act 511. Dawn Farm is a Washtenaw County based substance abuse treatment center. The goal of the program is to assist alcoholics and addicts in the journey to achieve lifelong recovery.
In Jail Thinking Matters Program
Thinking Matters is a Cognitive Restructuring program that forces individuals to examine the core attitudes and beliefs that motivate their thinking patterns and dictate their behaviors. It attempts to expose an individual to critical thinking errors that lead them to repeated, illegal, negative, or destructive behaviors. Thinking Matters then challenges individuals to develop new thinking patterns that if successful, over time, will establish new core attitudes and beliefs, therefore, changing behavior.
Meetings
The Thinking Matters Program is an intensive 6 to 8-week program that meets twice per week for 2 hours.
Thinking Matters requires regular attendance, group participation, written homework assignments.
Bonding Information
If a 10% bond is posted, the court will retain 10% of the posted amount. The bond is released to the bonder at completion of the case, or earlier, if ordered by judge. Bond can be posted in either the inmate’s name (if allowing inmate to use bond towards fine/costs) or the bonder’s name. Bond, less 10%, will be returned to the bonder or inmate depending on who’s name the bond was posted in.
If the 10% bond is placed in the bonder’s name, the refund check is sent by the court to the bonder once the court case is completed. However, if the inmate fails to appear at the court hearing, the bond is forfeited and the bonder is responsible for the total bond.
